An event focused on amplifying Latin voices in the film + TV and bringing the industry to our doorstep. Panel discussions on the experiences of the Latin Filmmaker, and what equity looks like for the Latin community.

Nick Barili is an Argentinian-American award-winning journalist, executive producer, director and writer. He is best known as the founder, director and host of Hard Knock TV, the creator/host/show-runner/director for De La Calle on MTV and Paramount+ and the executive producer and host of SEEN for The Oscars. Nick has devoted his career to purpose driven storytelling that inspires empathy and change, while humanizing marginalized communities.

Ginella Massa is an award-winning broadcast journalist, PR consultant, and sought after media personality and public speaker. Born in Panama to Spanish-speaking parents, and best known for making history as North America’s first hijab-wearing national TV news anchor, Ginella brings her uniquely intersecting identities to all of her work.
Ginella graduated with an Honours BA in Communication Studies at York University and has a diploma in Broadcast Journalism from Seneca College. She has worked in both TV and radio at many of Canada’s major networks, including CTV, CityNews, and CBC News where she was the primetime host of "Canada Tonight with Ginella Massa". As a PR and Media Consultant, Ginella has a strong passion for working with local community groups, helping bridge the media literacy gap, and change the narrative of marginalized communities.

Zaira Zarza is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Art History and Film Studies at Université de Montréal. She is also a film curator and programmer with experience in film festivals such as TIFF and FICCI.

Luis Felipe Avellaneda ─born and raised in Bogota, Colombia─ is a seasoned professional in economics, finance, and international trade. In his current position at the Colombian Government Trade Commission Office to Canada based in Toronto, he provides strategic counsel to Colombian companies seeking to export to/expand into the Canadian market, as well as to Canadian enterprises seeking partnerships within Colombia’s manufacturing and interactive digital media sectors. With a keen interest in economic development, international joint ventures, and the intersection of technology, arts, and culture, he brings a multifaceted approach to his work promoting the best of Colombia in Canada.

With a long-standing passion for film and television, Margaret has a breadth of industry knowledge. Over the past three years Margaret has helped film and television producers and businesses overcome numerous barriers to bring their content to life – whether it is their first or fiftieth production, as Sr. Relationship Manager on RBC’s Commercial Banking Media & Entertainment team. Prior to RBC, Margaret worked at Corus Entertainment as Project Manager in Business Operations for Original Content and International Distribution, and has held various roles at TIFF, NBCUniversal, was CMPA Diversity Mentorship Trainee, and is an alumnus of the Reelworld Producer Program. She is also a graduate of the University of Toronto, Rotman School of Management MBA.

Andrea Giusti is a producer with over 18 years of experience, having released 20 shows across various formats, including feature films, drama series, unscripted series, and documentaries. She has collaborated with major players like Netflix, Amazon, HBO, Discovery, YTO Original, and Globo. Her productions have won awards at Sundance, MIPTV, and MIPCOM.
Specializing in co-productions and international partnerships, Andrea has worked on co-productions with Brazil, including “Garcia” (Colombia), “Post Mortem” (Chile), and “Hijos de la Ruta” (Mexico). She is currently involved in a development co-production with France and Uruguay or Canada. Andrea regularly attends major international film festivals and co-production markets, fostering long-term media partnerships. Additionally, she served as a jury member for Panamá’s Concurso Fondo Cine 2019.

Diana Sanchez has over 25 years experience in the International and Canadian film industry. She has held positions at many international film festivals, including TIFF, both as Senior Director of Film, and as an International Programmer. Diana has worked in many film and cultural organizations, including the Madrid Film Archive, Rotterdam Film Festival, Miami Film Festival, Los Angeles Latino Film Festival (LALIFF) and the IFF Panama where she was the Founding Artistic Director. A life-long learner and educator, Diana has an MA in Cinema Studies from the University of Toronto where she teaches undergraduates. Her most recent series, Vertiginous Visions: Cinematic Encounters With Rapid Change (co-programmed with Jennifer Baichwal) is currently playing at the MAST Foundation in Bologna.

Born in Tucson Arizona, Rennata immigrated to Canada with her Mexican family as a child. She graduated with honours with a diploma in Broadcast Journalism from Seneca College at York University. For more than a decade, Rennata worked as a freelancer within the unscripted side of television, specializing in casting and story producing. She eventually found her path in working in factual children's content and has been nominated for multiple Canadian Screen Awards and won an Emmy Award in 2018. Her true passion is working with children and helping them tell their own stories. She says that the best kind of magic happens when it isn’t written down.

Born in Tucson Arizona, Georgina immigrated to Canada with her Mexican family as a child. She became passionate about making films when she “borrowed” indefinitely her father's camcorder as a teen, and taught herself to edit using two VCRs. For more than a decade, Georgina has produced and/or production managed all types of television programs including lifestyle, scripted, and animation, with a passion and preference for working in kids’ television. She has been nominated for three Daytime Emmy Awards and won two Canadian Screen Awards. Georgina is a member of the CMPA and serves on the Kids and Animation Committee. She is a National Screen Institute alumni and she received the Emerging Talent Award at the 2021 Youth Media Alliance Awards.

Felipe Téllez is a Colombian-Canadian media composer known for his unique fusion of electronic, Colombian folk, and classical music. He recently composed for films that entered TIFF 2023 and Cinequest (Orah and Lost in Tomorrow). He has also orchestrated for award-winning features and documentaries, and collaborated with award winning composers in Toronto and LA.
Felipe co-founded the Canadian Studio Symphony, an ensemble specializing in media music recording in Toronto. He’s the recipient of multiple arts council grants, and mentors emerging artists while teaching at various institutions, including the University of Toronto. With a doctorate in music, Felipe is a passionate educator as well as advocate for Latinos in film music and newcomers to Canada.

Colombian/Canadian Lina Rodriguez is an independent filmmaker with an established international trajectory. Her body of work, which includes four feature films and six shorts, has been showcased at film festivals and cultural venues, such as the Berlinale, TIFF, Locarno, NYFF, Hot Docs, Mar del Plata International Film Festival, the Harvard Film Archive, the ICA in London. Her films have also been honoured with retrospectives in Madrid, Buenos Aires and Bogotá.
Besides having theatrical releases, her films have been distributed on platforms such as iTunes, Crave, Air Canada, Mubi and are currently featured on the Criterion Channel.
She is currently in post-production on a feature documentary and in development on a Colombian-Canadian psychological thriller.

With a profound respect for artists and storytellers, combined with a strong dedication to justice and liberation, Kadon Douglas finds joy in supporting artists and cultural producers in their career development. Before her role at BIPOC TV & FILM, Kadon spearheaded dynamic marketing and communication approaches at The Creative School at Ryerson University, as well as at Women in Film & Television-Toronto. Kadon’s accolades include participation in prestigious programs like the Hot Docs International Film Festival: Doc Accelerator (2013) and the Shaw Media Diverse Voices initiative (2015). A 2023 Globe and Mail Top 25 Most Influential People in Canadian Television. Kadon maintains an active presence within the screen-based media community, generously offering her time as a speaker and advisor. Notably, she chaired the Reelworld Film Festival (2020) and sits on the board of the Canadian Independent Screen Fund for Black and POC creators (CISF) and the steering committee of Digital Media at the Crossroads. A Caribbean native—Grenada—Kadon lives in Toronto with her anime-loving teenage son and their cat, Lord Philip Onyx Douglas the First.

Luisa is a Colombian-born film executive, diversity advocate, and filmmaker. She is currently the Manager: Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging at ACTRA Toronto. Her previous work includes TIFF and Warner Bros. where she advocated for and created programs to support diversity and inclusion in the industry.

Originally from Brazil, Bruno S. Lyra was a corporate tax lawyer, having become the youngest partner in the history of his 70-year firm. However, in 2017, Bruno decided to walk away from his legal career to pursue his lifelong passion for film. Since making the switch, Lyra has devoted his time to three activities: a) he teaches film-related courses at Toronto Film School and Yorkville University, in addition to lecturing at other institutions (recent engagements include serving as panelist for Mensa Canada); b) he produces (credits include the award-winning feature The Sounding, which sold to HBO in 17 territories) and consults for a variety of productions; and c) he’s a screenwriter (highlights include a deal with Blue Ant Media for a hour-long drama he created, a feature film script selected for development financing by Telefilm, in addition to a deal on his bilingual hour-long drama The International School).

Diego is an accomplished Creative Producer and EDI Strategist from Montréal, boasting extensive experience in content development and crafting initiatives across media markets in Canada, Europe, and Latin America. His portfolio includes the production and direction of eight documentaries, a television series, an interactive project, and a short fiction film, all of which have been showcased on television or at national and international festivals. At the helm of Cuiba Media, Diego oversees the development of cross-media projects, with a keen emphasis on environmental, historical, and social issues. As a co-founder of Makila, a media incubation platform, and the Cuban Hat Project—a renowned pitching contest featured at various industry markets—he has made significant contributions to the media landscape. Additionally, Diego contributes as a board member of the Alter-cine Foundation, supporting filmmakers in the global South. Currently, he is the Senior Manager, Data Equity Research & Reporting at the Canada Media Fund.

For over 20 years, Ms. Accinelli has been a champion of Canadian talent and Canadian content. She is known for her attentive and transparent management style, and for her ability to build trusting relationships and partnerships. In her many roles at Telefilm, Ms. Accinelli has developed unique expertise in television, film, digital media, promotion and communications, with both English- and French-speaking markets.

Micah Kernan is the Development Manager for both Drama and Comedy. She coordinates the management, tracking and distribution of projects. She supports the team by evaluating pitches and being the point of contact for creators to connect with CBC. Micah is the current Programmer for Canada’s longest running short film showcase, Canadian Reflections. At the CBC, inclusion and representation are a priority. This means Micah works to reflect all of the regions and the country’s multifaceted nature, while programming for Canadian Reflections.

Anna Newallo has three decades of experience in the Film and TV industry. As a Program Consultant at Ontario Creates, her portfolio contains a wide range of programs and initiatives including the Film Fund (Production and Development), Marketing and Distribution Initiative and Industry Development Program. As a producer, her award-winning independent films have played major international festivals, and as a writer, her short stories have appeared in numerous publications and her debut novel was released spring 2024. Prior to joining Ontario Creates, she worked on projects for The Disney Channel, CTV, Discovery Channel, CBC, TMN (now Crave), CityTV and BRAVO.

Vinuja Shanthasoruban is a Tamil-Canadian producer, and actor from Scarborough who is passionate about uplifting underrepresented voices and increasing their access to the entertainment industry. As a Director of Development at Neshama, she's responsible for sourcing, developing and pitching concepts for Neshama's growing slate of projects. Vinuja is also an alumni of the Reelworld Producer Program and has worked on projects such as True Dating Stories (CBC) and Someone Lives Here (Hot Docs).

Alexis Grieve is an Emmy award-nominated producer who joined Sinking Ship Entertainment in 2016 after spending 5 years developing and producing indie films, including When Jews Were Funny (Winner - Best Canadian Feature TIFF 2013). A producer on multiple projects in the children’s television space including Dino Dana The Movie (Amazon/TVO), Endlings (Hulu/CBC), Ghostwriter (Apple), and Lockdown (YouTube Originals). Alexis oversees development for the company, and manages large scale partnerships with organizations like The Jane Goodall Institute, The International Fund for Animal Welfare, and The Planetary Society.

Magali Simard is the Director of Industry Relations at Cinespace Studios Toronto, Ontario’s largest production hub. She oversees industry relations, government affairs, Toronto studio expansions, brand deployment and has launched CineCares, Cinespace’s workforce training program. She is a Board Member of FilmOntario, the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television, and the City of Toronto’s Film Advisory Board.
She is the former Film Sector Development Officer for the City of Toronto and was a lead curator at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). She is a recurrent guest speaker and columnist in Canadian media and at industry events.

Evan Attard is the Director of Digital Strategy and Acquisitions at levelFILM, handling SVOD sales and digital distribution on titles such as Scarborough, The Assistant, The Miracle Club, and Mafia Mamma. With a background in entertainment analytics, he brings a keen awareness of industry and audience trends to levelFILM's acquisitions process and his work with partners such as Netflix, Paramount+, Crave, Mubi, and CBC. Evan has previously worked in business development at levelFILM, as a consultant at Nike, and has founded multiple companies within the creative industries.

Justine is currently the Director of Culture and Strategic Planning for CBC Unscripted. She is responsible for leading the equity and inclusion work within her department from data collection to initiatives that focus on increasing representation within the unscripted community. Some of the programs she has led include The Insiders’ Guide to Science and Nature Filmmaking, AccessCBC and Creating Connections, a collaboration with BIPOC TV & Film.
Justine has been with the CBC for over ten years and comes from a post production background. She started out on the CBC Unscripted team as a post-production coordinator for in-house productions and moved on to become the post-production supervisor for the department working with the independent production community. A few years ago she made the switch to equity and inclusion work.
Prior to the CBC and before returning to Canada Justine spent over a decade in Asia working in the media industry. She has worked in Hong Kong and Tokyo in all areas of production with emphasis in leading partnerships with foreign companies looking to do work in Asia as well as joint venture opportunities within the Asia Pacific region.

Jakub Jasinski is the Senior Manager of Events and Member Services at the CMPA. He manages the CMPA’s outreach initiatives, which include professional development, member outreach and networking events. Jakub acts as a point of contact for member inquiries and administers the CMPA’s sponsorship efforts. Additionally, Jakub works closely with the Vice-President, Communications, Marketing and Membership, supporting activities related to Prime Time, the Indiescreen Awards and other initiatives. Prior to joining the CMPA, Jakub worked at the Canadian Film Centre (CFC) as the coordinator for marketplace and outreach initiatives. Angela Moritsugu oversees the Canadian Academy’s growing roster of Talent Development initiatives. Previously, she’s worked on numerous independent Canadian productions in roles across departments, founded her own screening series, lent her skills to organizations such as TIFF, Hot Docs, the Canadian Film Centre, the University of Toronto, and the Royal Ontario Museum, and ran an arts-based professional development company for over three years.
An enthusiastic member and supporter of the Canadian screen industries, Angela is passionate about nurturing emerging talent and encouraging life-long learning, and aims to use the resources at her disposal to support filmmakers with diverse and intersectional backgrounds in launching and furthering their careers.

Cameron Chase is a multidisciplinary artist and producer based in Toronto. With a career spanning film and television production, theatre, experience creation, and multiple world renowned festivals, Cameron uses various artistic mediums to break down societal barriers, predominantly focusing on HIV/AIDS and Queer advocacy.
At the Canadian Academy, Cameron oversees the annual Members Forum – a major part of Canadian Screen Week – as well as year-round membership initiatives, including Academy Talks events and the monthly Where to Watch collection. Beyond the Academy, Cameron continues to create authentic collaborative experiences with Canadian brands such as lululemon, TIFF, Absolut Vodka, and HayU, to name a few.

Barbara Gilbert is the Acting Media Arts Officer at the Ontario Arts Council. Previously, Barbara was Artistic and Executive Director of Le Labo, Toronto's Francophone Media Arts Centre.

Lori Chodos has worked at Telefilm Canada on the Canada Media Fund Program Administration team since 2018. Prior to that she worked in documentary and narrative production in Toronto, New York and Lima, Peru.
